Check the person and the work category
The Building and Plumbing Commission's engaging a plumber guidance explains practitioner checks in Victoria. Use the directory and practitioner identification to check the actual person. The relevant registration or licence category should match the proposed work.
Keep the task clear when making that check. Roof stormwater work, gas work and a household fixture repair can involve different categories. A general description of someone as a plumber does not settle the applicable category for every task.
Compliance certificates
BPC's compliance certificate guidance includes a general threshold for work exceeding $750, including materials, appliances, labour and GST. Specified work requires certification regardless of value. Use the current guidance for the actual task; gas work categories have distinct requirements.
The value threshold should not be treated as a rule deciding whether someone needs a licence. Practitioner categories and compliance documentation are different checks. Keep both tied to the work proposed.
Review the proposed work
Use the checklist with the actual proposal: identify the task, check the relevant practitioner category, and confirm the applicable documentation through BPC. Keep an essential repair distinct from optional improvements so that both the work and the intended household result are clear.
